I congratulated my rival, complimenting his skill and stamina in the marathon. I knew the gal we were unofficially competing over valued athleticism, and he won fair and square. He laughed in my face. "Any ass can win poorly," she told me later that night, "but not everyone can lose well. I respect that more."
