The European Cross Spider

A European Cross SpiderThis spider's a heck of a critter. Evergreen, as well as the whole Pacific Northwest is full of the little buggers and man, do they acquire a nasty temper when they're molting. They're very beautiful things, though. A woody brown body displays a delicate cross on the tops of their abdomens, limned with darks and lights. Each cross is just a little bit different. Their orb webs are very pretty, too.

Yet another European Cross SpiderAnother European Cross SpiderThe females can grow quite large. I've seen specimens about a cm in diameter. Of course, those are females about to drop eggs, but still, they're damn intimidating!

Cross Spiders are apparently a delicacy among birds, quite tasty. I've never tried one myself, but I'll trust birds to know what's good for them.
