Profoundly Disturbing is a pretty cool read. Joe Bob Briggs digs through the history of each of the featured films, not only describing the movie in detail and how it changed history, but describing its birth and influences, and its legacy and children -- however weird and distorted those progeny might be. His writing ladles language into your head in an easy sweet gravy sort of way, and his understanding of the breadth and depth of movies, as well as their influences on each other and the industry in general, is tremendous.
The movies covered in this book are And God Created Woman, Blood Feast, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, Crash, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Curse of Frankenstein, Deep Throat (which is annoyingly difficult to find on the IMDB), Drunken Master, The Exorcist, Ilsa, She-Wolf of the S.S., Mom and Dad, Reservoir Dogs, Shaft, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Wild Bunch and you'll not find a better grouping of movies that fanny-banged the dominant paradigm, nor better discussed.
