A pleasant book. If you don't already have a pretty good idea what you're getting into when you pick up a Stephen King book, then this might surprise you. The main character, Rose, escapes from her sadistic husband Norm, who also happens to be a cop. Using all the tools of the trade, Norm makes a pretty good adversary, particularly since he's a nutcase. King pretty clearly made sure we realized that Norm was a nut -- cops aren't nuts per se. Comparing this book to Dolores Claiborne or Gerald's Game is interesting. King seems to be able to do a better female protagonist than he has in the past. And I mean uniquely female, not just a character that could be either. Rose could only be female and he wrote her well. The actual nature of the ending eluded me somewhat, but perhaps someone else can explain it to me.
