Review: It's Always Something

It's Always Something

Gilda Radner

Image of Book CoverI've wanted to read about Gilda Radner ever since I knew about her and reading her own words makes the story that much more filled with life. For those of you who don't know, Radner died of ovarian cancer after a long, harsh struggle, during which many times she and doctors thought she had finally beat the cancer. Through the entire time, she helped herself to stay alive by continuing to look around at each thing as if it were new and each day as if it was the first one.

She writes endlessly of her husband, being with her and staying close through some of the most terrifying things ever to happen. She writes of her dog, who never appeared to grow larger than a baseball mitt. She writes of the people she met, the others who struggled against the same killer she struggled against. Some survived, some didn't. That's just how things happened. I have heard that later editions if this book contain an afterward by Gene Wilder, but somehow, I think I prefer the first edition, which ends with hope. Do read this -- it's real.
