First Little Walker

Little walker, side viewHere's Poppa's happy li'l guy! The walking mechanism fits completely within a half a toilet paper tube. Nearly every part of it is made of wood. There are two exceptions. One is a pin in each leg that acts as a hip joint. You can see it in the picture above on the two outer legs.

Little walker, inside viewThe other exception is a copper loop attaching the rotating shaft to a carved wooden base in the bottom of the tube. You can see those in the photo above. Each pair of legs fit on a rotating shaft and each pair was mounted to a base with two copper loops.

Although the motor I attached to it (not pictured) had plenty of torque, the belts that fed to the three drive shafts just kept slipping. I did a lot of work to minimize friction all around, but the fact of the matter is that the wee beastie would have walked better if the belts had been toothed, or perhaps the whole thing geared.
