I think this sign was meant to have a little number tacked in front of "...miles further.", (like McDonalds has "100,000,000 served", except on the volcano, it would read "Over 200 burned alive!") but it reads funnier by not specifying at all. As it turned out, it was much closer than a mile. Much closer.
